Our House in Yokohama

Today, we arrived at our house in Yokohama. The trip with all of our suitcases was a bit tiring, but we were happy to arrive. The neighborhood is lovely. (See the picture below for a rather unillustrative picture of our front door.) We're down the street from a shopping area. The picture above shows a bit of the neighborhood. It's a typical view in that people usually use every bit of space they can get to plant flowers and garden.

Last day in Tokyo

Today was Russ's last day of Fulbright Orientation (among other discussion topics: "Is active learning imperialist"!), and tomorrow, we head to our apartment in Yokohama. Laurea and Mary spent another day at the National Children's Castle. In the evening, the Fullbrighters hosted a very nice dinner, but unfortunately, Laurea was not to last through it...only through the yakitori course.

More Tokyo

Today, Russ had Fulbright orientation for much of the day. Then, the Fulbright office treated us to a great lunch: sushi to start, a nabe for the second course (nabe is a stew-like dish that is cooked over a burner at your table; it takes many forms, but ours had a little beef, tofu, noodles and greens), then a seasonal bento that contained tempura among other things, and finally, a delicious small pudding that had a bit of red bean paste. Delicious!

In the afternoon, we visited the National Children's Castle, which was built at the height of the Japanese economy in the 1980s. Here, you can see Laurea at the rooftop and at the music floor. Other areas include: a well child check-up area, a pool, gymnasium, video library, indoor play structure, baby play areas, Japanese traditional craft room, parenting classes, etc. etc. All very reasonable for about 500 yen (a little less than 5 dollars) -- cheaper than the Hands On Museum!

The weather has been very nice - sunny and in the upper 60s. A nice change from Ann Arbor!

Arrival in Japan - Cherry blossoms

We arrived in Japan, and are staying in Tokyo for a few days before going on to Yokohama. The cherry blossom season is in full bloom, and we got to go to Ueno park and see some of the festivities. In the photo to the left, people are setting up tarps for their cherry blossom parties.

Our daughter, Laurea, loves the cherry blossoms and has been picking them since arrival.

Laurea says that she loves playing in Japan, at this indoor playground run by Tokyo's municipal government. Here she is wearing a kimono at an area you can pretend to be in a traditional Japanese house.
